Social Services

The Madison County Department of Social Services (DSS) is the local agency that administers the benefits and service programs established by the Virginia Department of Social Services. 

Madison DSS is the agency that County citizens should contact for information and application assistance for various programs, including Child Care Assistance; Energy Assistance (fuel, crisis, cooling, weatherization); SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - food stamps); Medical Assistance (Medicaid or FAMIS) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Please call 833-522-5582 to apply for benefits.

Madison DSS also serves as the agency responsible for investigating reports of child abuse and neglect and of alleged exploitation or abuse of elderly persons.

The local DSS is subject to oversight by the local Board of Social Services, a five-member board appointed by the Madison County Board of Supervisors. This local Board appoints the local Director of Social Services. Visit the Social Services Board page to learn more.

Apply Online at The CommonHelp Website, which is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week; to allow citizens to apply for benefits such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps), Medicaid (medical assistance for the financially needy), Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF), Child Care Assistance, and Energy Assistance (home heating and cooling assistance).
