Building Department

bsm_2023Our Mission

The mission of the Madison County Building Department is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the general public by ensuring the requirements of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (Virginia USBC) are met.

This includes accepting permit applications, reviewing construction documents and plans, issuing permits, performing inspections, and issuing certificates of occupancy. The Building Department is also here to answer questions and make interpretations of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code regulates new construction, alteration, rehab, renovation, and movement of buildings, accessory structures, and equipment to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the general public.

Important Note

Any and all development (or work) in a flood zone (FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Area) must be permitted. In other words, if you perform any type of work in a flood zone, a permit is required.

Visit the SFHA's official website to see if your property is located within a flood zone. This link is to the County GIS site; open the layers tab; then open the Flood Mapping menu; turn on Flood Zones 2020 (you can also activate the water surface elevations -or- the base flood elevations).

The purpose of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.
