The Madison County Department of Social Services is the local agency that administers the benefits and service programs established by the Virginia Department of Social Services.
The local DSS is subject to oversight by the local Board of Social Services, a five-member board appointed by the Madison County Board of Supervisors. The following individuals are the current members of the local Board of Social Services: James Arrington, Board of Supervisors' Representative; Lisa Robertson, County Administrator; Michael Hale; Barbara Breeding and Doris Turner. This local Board appoints the local Director of Social Services.
Madison DSS is the agency that County citizens should contact for information and application assistance for various programs, including: child care assistance; energy assistance (fuel, crisis, cooling, weatherization); SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - food stamps); general relief; medical assistance (Medicaid or FAMIS) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
Madison DSS also serves as the agency responsible for investigating reports of child abuse and neglect and of alleged exploitation or abuse of elderly persons.

Homeless Prevention Program: DSS is currently accepting applications for financial assistance with rental and utility payments. |

Thanksgiving and Christmas Assistance Program: Any individuals desiring to donate money, food or gift items to needy families should contact the local DSS for information about how they may help. Any individuals or families desiring to participate in the program should also contact the local DSS office for information about how to apply for assistance. |
