Animal Shelter Every county in Virginia is required to maintain a facility for the temporary impoundment of companion animals that have been taken into custody by animal control officers or abandoned by their owners. In Madison, this facility is referred to as our Animal Shelter. The mission of the County’s animal shelter is to serve as a suitable environment for the temporary confinement of animals, to provide humane care for those animals, and to find safe and loving homes for as many animals as possible.
Animal Control Officers Every county in Virginia is required by law to appoint one or more animal control officers (ACOs); Madison County currently employs two. These officers are responsible for enforcement of laws for the protection of domestic animals. Madison County’s ACOs are tasked with the additional duty of managing the day-to-day operations of the Animal Shelter. Each ACO is required to have knowledge of Virginia’s animal control and protection laws and is subject to mandatory state training requirements that include completion of a basic animal control course within two years after appointment and a minimum of fifteen (15) hours of additional training every three years thereafter. ACOs have the power to issue misdemeanor summonses or to obtain felony warrants, when in uniform or when displaying a badge or other credentials of office. |
