The County Transfer Station & Recycling Center is our centrally-located facility for collection, management, recycling and disposal of solid waste, recyclable materials, and other refuse of the residents and businesses of Madison County. At the Transfer Station, our community’s solid waste is transferred from collection vehicles into larger trucks, to be transported to a disposal or recycling destination outside the County. The Transfer Station commenced operations on June 1, 1999, following the closure of the County’s Landfill. As a result of the closure of the County’s old landfill, as well as state regulations which require maintenance of a solid waste management plan, the County is subject to a level of regulatory oversight and reporting that necessitates ongoing environmental and engineering consulting services. The County has contracted with Waste Management, Inc. for the operation of the transfer station. WM charges the County a flat rate for operation of the facility, and separate fees for trucking solid waste from Madison to Amelia County’s landfill. |
YES! WE ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS:
Aluminum: Cans only (no doors, siding, chairs, etc). Cans should be rinsed
"Tin" cans: Should be rinsed
Appliances: $5 disposal fee
Brush: Disposal fee, $0.03 per pound. FREE during the months of October and March
Cardboard: Boxes should be broken down and free of staples
Glass: Should be rinsed. NO lids or caps
Mixed paper: Catalogs, magazines and junk mail only
Newspaper: Should be tied or placed in a paper bag. Please, NO plastic bags
Tires: Disposal fee: $2 per passenger or small truck tire. Tires must be off rims
NO: tractor and large truck tires cannot be accepted
Paint(dried): Leave paint cans open until paint has dried, or mix with kitty litter. Then place with regular trash

Batteries: Batteries are accepted at Wise Recycling, 745 N. Commerce Street, Culpeper, Virginia
Motor Oil: Used motor oil is accepted at Shelby Automotive, Rt. 29, Shelby, Virginia
Plastics: Plastics are accepted for recycling at Wise Recycling, 745 N. Commerce Street, Culpeper, Virginia
Propane tanks: Scrap metal is accepted for recycling at Wise Recycling, 745 N. Commerce Street, Culpeper, Virginia
Punch a hole in the propane tank or cut it in half
