The County provides a number of Emergency Services, in accordance with the requirements of state law.
Emergency Communications (E911): The term “E911” refers to a service consisting of telephone network features that allow users of various telephone systems to reach a public safety answering point (PSAP) by dialing the digits “9-1-1”. This service automatically directs 911 emergency telephone calls to the appropriate PSAP by selective routing based on the geographical location from which an emergency call originates, and provides capability for automatic number identification and automatic location identification features. Madison County established its E911 Operations Center in FY02-03. The E911 Operations Center is the main PSAP for emergency calls that require immediate assistance in the form of law enforcement, fire or emergency medical services.
Emergency Management: The Board of Supervisors is responsible for providing a program of local disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The local program must be maintained in accordance with state disaster preparedness plans and programs, and must provide an agency of emergency management which has jurisdiction over and services the entire political subdivision. In Madison County, we have a Department of Emergency Management staffed by a part-time director who serves as a coordinator of emergency management services. The Director of Emergency Management reports to the County Administrator.
Emergency Medical Services: The County provides emergency medical services through a combination of paid employees and volunteer rescue squad services. The paid County staff are employed within the County’s Department of Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) which is headed by a Director of Emergency Medical Services. Volunteer emergency medical services are provided by the Madison County Rescue Squad, an independent, non-profit organization funded by a combination of community donations and local government funding. County EMS services are supplemented via mutual aid agreements with the Reva and Rapidan Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies.
Emergency Firefighting Services: The County’s emergency firefighting services are provided by the Madison County Volunteer Fire Company. The Volunteer Fire Company is an independent, non-profit organization funded by a combination of community donations and local government funding. County firefighting services are supplemented via mutual aid agreements with the Reva and Rapidan Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies.
